TAI CHI BREATH ARMS
Layer 1
• Step feet wide to Wide Wu Chi
• Sink into your hips
• Tuck the tail bone under
• Breathe in
• Breathe out, let it go

• Draw your fingertips across
• And back
• Weight shift side to side

Layer 3
• It’s like you’re finger painting – can you release
through the shoulders and feel the breath?
• We have no time to rush – move from thinking
to feeling. Stretch your fingers and feel them
move through the air
CIRCLE ARMS WITH SOFT BLOCK
• Full circle with your arms
• All the way around
• All the way to the top
• Slowly lower down, soft block
• Other way
• All the way around
• Halfway again and down
• Add the breath – in, out, in, out
• Pressing your knees out
Layer 3
• Start to roll through the spine, dropping the
head forward

shoulders come right down

ESSENCE TIPS
We start this release with fresh choreography and
a great song. The movements complement the
music, as we change tempo throughout the track
finding softness in the slower movements, and
warmth and release in the quicker Arm Circles.
Each time we encounter new moves, find the time
to practise in front of a mirror to ensure you have
easy-to-follow, flowing movements. Your timing,
range and fluidity of motion are all important in
getting the right feel of the choreography, which
you can then coach from. Practise will also help
you discover the 4 types of movements of Tai
Chi and coach to these movements (warming,
breathing, releasing, focusing).
Coach the Circle Arms with Soft Block very simply
and clearly for participants using body-part and
direction so they have the basic move. This
allows them to let go and embrace the feel of the
movements.
Then, once participants have found the rhythm
and feeling in their bodies, we can add the breath
and alignment cues of pressing knees out to
stabilize the lower body as they swing and release
the upper body.
Sometimes moving quickly can be alarming for
some, especially newer participants. Set them
up for success by minimalizing cues, then look
out and see what they need. What cues can you
deliver to bring your participants their focus
internally?
